TIME AWAY FROM CITY

A day in the canyons of Kagel had us marveling at the emptiness that is The Valley, Los Angeles, California. We played catch with a bright pink tennis ball we found, that was later swallowed by the Earth. We looked up at the clouds to find animal shapes. We wandered through cold spots and warm spots and muddy spots. We played house. It was a simple day, but it couldn't have been any more rich and fulfilling than it was. As we walked back to the car, we were torn between going forth or abandoning ship and heading back to the peace and quiet we so reveled in.

On the one hand, there were sounds of car alarms, ambulances rushing to help the dead, cars heading nowhere, highways leading them there, screaming married couples, wedding bells...And on the other hand, there was stillness.

We decided to go forth, but felt good knowing that we had a choice. Just as we did go ahead, towards the busyness, the sun suddenly hit us like a million lashes to the head. A warm feeling came over that no expensive meal or diamond ring or luxury vacation could have ever replaced.

Here we are, back at the computer, back to the grind, back in the real world. We made the choice. So we'll deal with it, anyway. But we will miss that willow tree, under which we could have spent the rest of our lives, enjoying sunlight and the shade whenever we wanted.
